Battlefield Band Concert 5 June in Christchurch

Returning to New Zealand on Thursday June 5th, Scottish folk legends, The Battlefield Band will be entertaining Christchurch music enthusiast’s with a night of Scottish and Irish folk music for all ages. Following the release of their latest album ‘Dookin’, the band has decided to stop off in Christchurch on their tour round the globe.

    The Music Committee of CNP will make a decision on which of the Piobaireachd Society (UK) 2009 tunes will be added to the NZ list within a week from now.

    The following tunes for 2009 have just been announced by the Piobaireachd Society. Four tunes from the Senior Competitions list below will be added to the NZ Clasp list and four tunes from the Gold Medal list below will be added to the NZ Gold Medal List.     Competitors are not restricted to the settings or styles in the books mentioned above, and may play any other setting or style, provided that the judges may take into consideration the authenticity and merits of the setting or style submitted. Competitors are advised to give advance notice to the judges should they intend to play settings or styles different from sources stated above. Altogether different tunes known by the same or similar names will not be accepted as alternatives. This announcement is made by the Piobaireachd Society to ensure earliest publication. It is without prejudice to any arrangements made by either the Argyllshire Gathering or the Northern Meeting.

    Wellington Pipers ClubThe Wellington Pipers Club Presents the annual club competitions Saturday June 14 08.

    The Brown Cup (Open Light Music).
    The Everest Memorial Open Piobaireachd.
    The City Of Wellington Cup. (B Grade and below excl former winners).

    To be held at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Papakowhai, Porirua.

    The Wellington Pipers Club has decided to continue to develop the winter solo piping season by scheduling its annual competitions for members immediately following on from the Claymore Invitational in Palmerston North and the Queens Birthday weekend competitions in Dunedin by holding its annual Everest Memorial Piobaireachd and Brown Cup and City of Wellington Cup Competitions on Saturday June 14 2008.

    The Everest memorial and Brown Cup competition has no entry fee and is open to all financial club members. Anyone interested in competing who is not already a financial member of the Club can join the club for $15.

    The City of Wellington Cup has no entry fee and competitors are not required to be members of the club.

    The City of Wellington Cup is open to all competitors B-Grade and below (excluding former winners.) Competitors play a Slow Air and 2/4 March of their own choice and will be judged by Mr Ross Hanning. This competition will commence at approx 9.30am. (Times may change depending on entries)

    The Everest Memorial Piobaireachd competition commemorates Past President Bob Everest. Competitors will be required to submit three tunes of their own choice one of which will be selected by the judges to play. This competition will commence at 11.00am. (Times may change depending on entries)

    The Brown Cup competition The Brown Cup was donated by former Club Patron WG Brown and requires competitors to play a march, strathspey and reel, jig and hornpipe and a slow air of their own choice with a maximum of two tuning breaks. This competition will commence at 2.00pm. (Times may change depending on entries)

    The judges for both Open events will be two of New Zealand’s leading judges, both of whom are former multiple winners of the Brown Cup; Mr Iain Hines and Mr John Hanning.

    2009 Tunes Released

    Greg Wilson, the secretary of the CNP Music Committee, today announced half of the 2009 tunes. The remaining tunes are to be drawn from the Scottish list, which has not been released yet. Once the Piobaireachd Society (Scotland) announce their list the CNP Music Committee will select the remaining tunes to be included on the NZ list.
