The Brown Cup: Sat June 12: Police College

The Wellington Pipers Club will be holding its annual Everest Memorial Piobaireachd and Brown Cup Competitions on Saturday June 12 2010, at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Papakowhai, Porirua.

The Judging panel for both events will be senior club members Alistair Hanning of Auckland and Ross Hanning of Wellington.

The Prize money for both events is as follows: 1st $150, 2nd $100, 3rd $75 & 4th $ 50. The fourth prize will be awarded only if there are at least 8 competitors.

The Everest Memorial and Brown Cup competition has an entry fee of $8 and is open to all financial club members. Anyone interested in competing who is not already a financial member of the Club can join the club for $15. The Everest Memorial Piobaireachd competition commemorates Past President Bob Everest.  Competitors will be required to submit three tunes of their own choice one of which will be selected by the judges to play.  This competition will commence at 9.30am. (Times may change depending on entries)

The Brown Cup competition The Brown Cup was donated by former Club Patron WG Brown and requires competitors to play a march, strathspey and reel, jig and hornpipe and a slow air of their own choice with a maximum of two tuning breaks.  The Strathspey and Reel will be judged as a separate event within the Brown Cup and the winner will receive the Neil and Alan McPhee Memorial Tray and a bottle of Glenfiddich Single malt. This competition will commence at 1.30pm. (Times may change depending on entries).

Easton Wins Everest Piobaireachd

As part of the Brown Cup competition, which he also won, Stuart Easton won the Bob Everest Memorial Piobaireachd playing the Gathering of Clan Chattan in Wellington on Saturday. Linsay May was second playing Lament for the Viscount of Dundee, Iain Roberson was third playing Lament for Donalds Tutor and Marion Horsburgh was fourth playing the Earl of Seaforths Salute.

The AGM of the Wellington Piper’s Club is to be held immediately following the conclusion of the Brown Cup at the Royal New Zealand Police College (approximately 4.00pm) on Saturday June 13th 2009.

Timing for the Brown Cup is yet to be finalised as this will be determined by final entries, however, it is likely to commence at 9.30am.  The events will be held at the theatre attached to the swimming pool complex.  Would all competitors and spectators please report to reception upon arrival at the Police College and sign in and receive a visitors badge and directions to the Theatre.

The Police College has its cafeteria open for refreshments throughout the day and the bar will be open following the conclusion of the event.

The Brown Cup (Open Light Music) and the Everest Memorial Open Piobaireachd will be held on Saturday, June 13 2009 at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Papakowhai, Porirua. The Judging panel for both events will be senior club members and two of New Zealand’s most eminent judges: Mr John Hanning and Iain Hines of Wellington.

For the first time in the Clubs history, they will be offering prize money for both events as follows:

The City Of Wellington Cup. (B Grade and below excl former winners).

To be held at the Royal New Zealand Police College, Papakowhai, Porirua.

The Wellington Pipers Club has decided to continue to develop the winter solo piping season by scheduling its annual competitions for members immediately following on from the Claymore Invitational in Palmerston North and the Queens Birthday weekend competitions in Dunedin by holding its annual Everest Memorial Piobaireachd and Brown Cup and City of Wellington Cup Competitions on Saturday June 14 2008.

The Everest memorial and Brown Cup competition has no entry fee and is open to all financial club members. Anyone interested in competing who is not already a financial member of the Club can join the club for $15.

The City of Wellington Cup has no entry fee and competitors are not required to be members of the club.

The City of Wellington Cup is open to all competitors B-Grade and below (excluding former winners.) Competitors play a Slow Air and 2/4 March of their own choice and will be judged by Mr Ross Hanning. This competition will commence at approx 9.30am. (Times may change depending on entries)

The Everest Memorial Piobaireachd competition commemorates Past President Bob Everest. Competitors will be required to submit three tunes of their own choice one of which will be selected by the judges to play. This competition will commence at 11.00am. (Times may change depending on entries)

The Brown Cup competition The Brown Cup was donated by former Club Patron WG Brown and requires competitors to play a march, strathspey and reel, jig and hornpipe and a slow air of their own choice with a maximum of two tuning breaks. This competition will commence at 2.00pm. (Times may change depending on entries)

The judges for both Open events will be two of New Zealand’s leading judges, both of whom are former multiple winners of the Brown Cup; Mr Iain Hines and Mr John Hanning.
