OPA Introduce Gold & Silver Piobaireachd Medals to Queens Birthday Competition

October 28, 2007

The Otago Pipers’ Association (OPA) has negotiated with the Otago Centre of the Piping and Dancing Assn. the introduction of Gold Medal and Silver Medal competitions to replace the present Open or ‘A’ grade and ‘B’ grade events. The OPC has secured funding that will ensure prize money totalling at least $1,000 for the Gold Medal event and up to $400 for the Silver Medal event. Entry to the Gold Medal competition is restricted to Pipers who are ‘A’ Grade or who have won a Dunedin or Comunn na Piobaireachd Silver Medal competition in a previous year. If in any particular year the winner of the competition has previously won the Dunedin Gold Medal, then he/she will be awarded a Clasp rather than a Gold Medal. Competitors are to submit three tunes from a combination of the Gold Medal and Clasp set tune lists published by the Comunn na Piobaireachd (NZ) Music Committee for that year. The Silver Medal competition is restricted to pipers who are ‘B’ Grade or lower and who have not won the Dunedin Silver Medal or the Comunn na Piobaireachd Silver Medal in a previous year. Competitors are to submit three tunes from the Comunn na Piobaireachd Silver Medal set tune lists for that year. C Grade Piobaireachd – competitors are to submit and play one tune of their own choice.
