City of Wellington Cup and Recital by PM Iain Robertson, Sunday October 18th at 4.00pm Paraparaumu Pipe Band Hall Weka Road Raumati.

The club is once again delighted to hosted by the Paraparaumu Pipe Band and will be holding its annual City of Wellington Cup competition on Sunday October 18th 2009 at the Bands hall at Weka Rd Paraparaumu commencing at 4.00pm.

The City of Wellington Cup was donated by PM Alan Guild who stipulated that the competition is open to any member of a Pipe Band in the Wellington Centre who is not an A Grade or Open player. The competition requires each competitor to play a slow march and march in the one performance. There is no entry fee for the competition but those wishing to compete must contact the secretary Ross Hanning at rjhanning@xtra.co.nz to enter.

Following the City of Wellington Cup competition a light dinner will be served and we are delighted to announce that Iain Robertson, PM of the New Zealand Police Pipe band and one of the country’s leading soloists will then give a recital. Iain will also judge the City of Wellington Cup.
Entry Fees for the event will be $15 for adults and $10 for school children inclusive of your dinner and the recital. For catering purposes I would appreciate it if people could let me know by e mail if they are going to attend the event.

Brown Cup and Everest Piobaireachd Competition and Club AGM: Saturday June 13th 2009
These events attracted a top entry of the country’s leading players and a great day was had at the Royal New Zealand Police College. The winner of both events was Stuart Easton of Palmerston North. Our thanks to judges John Hanning, Fin Macgee and Craig Fraser.
At the Clubs AGM held at the Brown Cup, the following were elected:

  • Vice President Iain Robertson
  • Secretary Ross Hanning
  • Treasurer Fin Macgee
  • Committee David Welsh,Cheryl Austin,Marion Horsbrough

On Saturday June 27th 2009 the Clubs Levin Competition for Junior Players was held as usual with the able assistance of Rob McNabb and his team from Levin. Many thanks to Ross Wilson for assisting with the judging and Craig Fraser and Marion Horsburgh for assisting with the stewarding.

Saturday 26 September 2009 at Scots College- For a number of reasons we did not manage to hold this event. We are now looking at the piping calendar for a suitable date to hold this event and further details will follow once this is finalised.

Overseas Piping Success
The club is delighted to record the recent success in Scotland of club member Marion Horsburgh in winning the Gold Medal at Braemar and her third placing in one of world’s premier solo piping events; the Gold Medal at Oban. Well done Marion!
Bob Irvine
It is with deepest regret that we record the recent passing of Bob Irvine. Bob was a dedicated supporter of all things piping and his presence at our events will be greatly missed. The Club extends its deepest sympathies to Bob’s family.
A reminder that the club activities and its support for piping in Wellington depends on club member subscriptions. If you have not paid your subscription please do so to the Treasurer Finn Macgee $20. Your subscription can be posted to the Secretary Wellington Pipers Club P O Box 29-086, Wellington. The club is now a registered charity and any donations to the club qualify for a tax rebate and will be greatly appreciated.
