Despite the events Christchurch has faced over recent times, the Silver Chanter competitions at Labour Weekend (October 22-23) are still going ahead. The venues for the competitions have come through safe and sound, judges have been confirmed, and everything is all set for another great weekend!

There will also be a recital on the friday night by international judge Bob Worrall of Canada. More details on this to follow.

As some of you may be aware, Labour weekend this year coincides with the Rugby World Cup finals. The committee are making sure that no events will clash with any RWC games, and a venue is being organised for competitors and supporters to watch these games.

We are looking forward to a great weekend and hope you can join us!

The Highland Piping Society of Canterbury Jubilee History: Copies Available

The title of the book might lead you to think it could be a little dry, but I’m told that it is a gem. This is explained by the fact that it has been written by professionals. In addition, both  Gordon Ogilvie and Alex Thomson have a long association with piping in Canterbury, so it could hardly miss. Highlights include:

  • Scottish culture in “English” Canterbury.
  • Piping and pipe bands in Canterbury
  • promoting Piobaireachd
  • 102 piper biographies
  • 142 illustrations
  • Coverage of international piping personalities
