Easton Wins Everest Piobaireachd

As part of the Brown Cup competition, which he also won, Stuart Easton won the Bob Everest Memorial Piobaireachd playing the Gathering of Clan Chattan in Wellington on Saturday. Linsay May was second playing Lament for the Viscount of Dundee, Iain Roberson was third playing Lament for Donalds Tutor and Marion Horsburgh was fourth playing the Earl of Seaforths Salute.

The AGM of the Wellington Piper’s Club is to be held immediately following the conclusion of the Brown Cup at the Royal New Zealand Police College (approximately 4.00pm) on Saturday June 13th 2009.

Timing for the Brown Cup is yet to be finalised as this will be determined by final entries, however, it is likely to commence at 9.30am.  The events will be held at the theatre attached to the swimming pool complex.  Would all competitors and spectators please report to reception upon arrival at the Police College and sign in and receive a visitors badge and directions to the Theatre.

The Police College has its cafeteria open for refreshments throughout the day and the bar will be open following the conclusion of the event.

Sad news from Dunedin with loss of Fergus Mathieson, a stalward of the Dunedin and NZ pipe band scene. He had been on the NZ panel of  judges for a long time, having judged at a number of national championships.

From PBNews:

Fergus Mathieson, a prodigal member of the Dunedin and Otago piping community, passed away at 1:30pm on Sunday, during the Queens Birthday Competitions. He passed away at the Otago Community Hospice.

He is survived by his wife, and his son Lester.

The Funeral will be on Thursday at 11am. Details will be updated as they become available. The thoughts of the Piping community are with Fergus’ family.

Stuart Easton was the victor at the Queens Birthday Solo Piping championships in the weekend. Queens Birthday is one of the last opportunities for pipers travelling to Scotland to air their tunes. The Dunedin Gold Medal, a Piobaireachd competition based on the list from Hastings, was won by Richard Hawke. Marion Horsburgh was 2nd. The Dunedin Silver Medal was won by Ben Murray.

Lester Flockton Honoured for Services to Pipe Bands & Education

Long time educator and pipe band activist, Lester Flockton, was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. The Otago Daily Times says:

Mr Flockton has also been involved with pipe bands as a piper and administrator for many years.He played in the City of Dunedin Highland Pipe Band where he was a former president and a life member.

He was vice-president of the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Association for 10 years, the founding director of the association’s education group, and led the establishment of a national college of piping and drumming.

He organised many summer schools and instigated the establishment of a piping and drumming curricular and examination system for the award of certificates of music proficiency.

Colin Craig Results: Horsburgh Wins Piobaireachd, Frewen the Claidhnmor

Marion Horsburgh won the Targe for Piobaireachd, playing the Viscount of Dundee, at the Colin Craig Claidhmor & Targe held at the Celtic Inn today. Jamie Hawke was second playing the Unjust Incarceration and Martin Frewen was third playing the Bicker.

Martin Frewen won the Claidhmor event (MSR, Jig & Hornpipe), with George Mason second, Murray Mansfield third and Iain Robertson fourth.

The judges were Brendon Eade & Stuart Easton, the 2008 winners.

Canterbury Caledonian PB Secure James Laughlin

James Laughlin, noted side-drummer, tutor, and member of the 5-time world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe band, has been appointed Drum Sergeant of the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band.

The best piping in the best location. The Claidhmor Competition is on again at the Celtic Inn Palmerston North. Piobaireachd in the morning and light music in the afternoon.The judges are Brendan Eade Stuart Easton (last year’s winners). The competitors are:
